Cereals Can Be Rewarding If You Have Space. Look At All The Foods That Can Be Produced.

I have previously written about how to grow various ancient grains, cereals and psuedocereals including specific articles on buckwheat, quinoa etc. In this article I list some of the hundreds of global foods that are produced when we are growing cereals. It’s not an exhaustive list and a few are not easy in the UK eg. rice, despite our seeming unending rain!, but if we can’t grow them all we can buy most of them in almost any supermarket.

Breads and Baked Goods

Crop rotation: an ear of Wheat
Crop rotation: Wheat was part of the Norfolk Four Course Rotation.
  • Wheat bread: White, whole wheat, sourdough, and other bread varieties
  • Rye bread: Sourdough rye, “ryeberry”, and rye multigrain
  • Cornbread: Cornmeal, cornbread muffins .. this is a bit US centric … though we can buy cornflour in the UK we might be better to call it maize flour.
  • Quinoa bread: Made with quinoa flour
  • Buckwheat bread: Made with buckwheat flour .. I buy some when I’m in France but it is available here as well. It is however easy to grow in the UK an d can be grown as a catch crop.
  • Amaranth bread: Made with amaranth flour
  • Oatmeal bread: Made with oatmeal
  • Pita bread: Traditionally made with wheat flour, but can also be made with other grains
  • Tortillas: “Corn” or flour tortillas
  • Wraps: Wheat, whole wheat, or multigrain wraps
  • Crepes: Thin, delicate pancakes made with flour, eggs, and milk
  • Galettes: Similar to crepes but made with buckwheat flour .. I love making galettes.
  • Blintzes: Crepes filled with cheese, fruit or other fillings
  • Blinis: very similar to blintzes
  • Pancakes: Thick, fluffy pancakes made with flour, eggs, and milk
  • Naan: A flatbread commonly used in Indian cuisine, typically made with wheat flour. I like making Kashmiri naan as I love the honey, coconut and cardamon.

  • Ravioli: Italian dumplings filled with various fillings, such as meat, cheese, or vegetables
  • Dumplings: A general term for small, doughy balls that can be filled with various ingredients
  • Samosas: Indian or Middle Eastern pastries filled with savory or sweet fillings

Breakfast Cereals

  • Oatmeal: Rolled oats or steel-cut oats to make flapjacks etc
  • Granola: A mixture of oats, nuts, seeds, and honey
  • Muesli: A similar mixture to granola, but often without added sugar
  • Cornflakes: A popular breakfast cereal made from maize.

Other Products

  • Beer: Made from barley or wheat
  • Porridge: The quintessential Scottish dish made with oats and milk
  • Polenta: An Italian dish made from cornmeal
  • Tabbouleh: A Lebanese salad made with bulgur wheat, parsley, tomatoes, and other vegetables
  • Khichdi: An Indian dish made with rice and lentils. Growing rice in the UK is sadly a non runner.
  • Bulgur: A cracked wheat grain often used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine
  • Roti: A flatbread commonly used in Indian cuisine, typically made with wheat flour
  • Chapati: A flatbread commonly used in Indian cuisine, typically made from whole wheat flour
  • Paratha: A layered flatbread commonly used in Indian cuisine, typically made with whole wheat flour
  • Idli: A steamed rice and lentil cake commonly eaten in South India
  • Dosa: A thin, crispy pancake made from fermented rice and lentil batter

The above is just a hint at what could be possible to grow and cook here. I haven’t mentioned grains such as spelt, triticale etc. That’s a list for another day.

Let me finish with the article I wrote on the allotment tenant that grew the smallest crop of wheat and made a pizza. It’s an example of how grain has been grown on an allotment in the UK and was turned into a pizza.
