The choice of plants to grow is huge, from fruit and veg to bulbs, corms, tubers, shrubs, trees and all the other forms of plant life available to us. The menu at the top of this website links to an increasing number of articles and posts on the wealth of plant life we can grow in our variable climate. Some are native to this country, some are naturalised and some have been brought from around the globe by plant hunters over many centuries.
In Henry Vlll time the range of plants grown in garden was limited to a small number of food and medicinal plants. At most they would have had a few hundred plants to choose from. Today few garden centres carry less than 5000 different plants and we have 50,000 or more to choose from in normal circumstances.
Globally the number of plant species is believed to exceed 350,000.
