Growing Seasons Are Too Short Due To Light Levels & Temperature. Don’t Let The UK Climate Limit Your Garden. Learn Practical Methods For Extending Growing Seasons Through Better Light & Temperature Control.

Extending the growing season in the British climate is primarily a task of managing temperatures and light levels. By manipulating the microclimate, you can effectively “move” your garden several hundred miles south, gaining 4–8 weeks of additional productivity.

The further north, or the higher in altitude we go, the later the growing season will be. But extending the growing season isn’t rocket science. Anyone can do it.

1. Physical Structures (The “Hardware”)

Structures act as a buffer against the UK’s unpredictable spring frosts and autumn damp.

  • Polytunnels & Greenhouses: These are the most effective tools for year-round cultivation. A polytunnel can raise the internal temperature significantly; the RHS notes that even unheated glass or plastic can advance the season by 2 to 4 weeks. But, more than just extend the season, they can ensure crops can be grown all year. See my article on Winter Salads.
  • Cold Frames & Mini-Greenhouses: Ideal for “hardening off” seedlings or protecting winter salads. Positioning these against a south-facing brick wall allows the structure to absorb radiant heat during the day and release it at night.
  • Cloches & Horticultural Fleece: For in-ground beds, heavy-grade fleece (30g/m²) provides roughly 2°C of frost protection. Cloches (plastic or glass covers) can raise soil temperatures by up to 10°C, accelerating germination in early March. But, more importantly, fleece protects crops from the wind.

2. Soil & Site Manipulation

Warm soil is often more important than warm air for early-season growth.

  • Pre-Warming Beds: Cover your soil with black plastic or “mulch sheets” 2–3 weeks before sowing. This traps solar radiation and prevents heat loss through evaporation, allowing for earlier seed germination and earlier growth rates.
  • Thermal Mass: Inside greenhouses or polytunnels, place dark-coloured water butts or stacks of bricks.These act as “heat batteries,” absorbing energy during the day to prevent overnight temperature “dips” that can stall plant growth. Of course they will not prevent a really hard frost, but does protect just a little when the frost is mild.
  • Raised Beds: As previously discussed, these drain faster and warm up more quickly than the surrounding earth, often allowing for planting 7–10 days earlier than in-ground plots. But, in a dry spring, you might prefer more moisture and not appreciate drier soils.

3. Varietal Selection & Timing (The “Software”)

The “Hungry Gap” (April to June) is best managed by choosing varieties bred specifically for low-light or low-temperature performance. Also consider the crops that overwinter and come into their own now. For example, outdoor grown broad beans harvested in May, plus some brassicas such as kale and some cabbage. Perennials such as rhubarb are also ready in this Hungry Gap. Leafy crops such as lettuce also come into their own during the hungry gap with lettuce under glass being ready around April 1st and outdoor lettuce by mid – late May.

4. Lighting Strategies

In late autumn (October onwards), the lack of daylight becomes a greater bottleneck than temperature.

  • Reflective Mulches: Somer people use white or silver sheets can bounce light back up into the canopy of plants like tomatoes or peppers, helping them ripen before the first frost. The effect is however minimal in most cases.
  • Clean Surfaces: Ensure greenhouse glass or polytunnel plastic is cleaned of algae in September. A 10% reduction in light due to dirt can significantly decrease the metabolic rate of winter leafy crops.

Academic Note: Horticultural research indicates that the “base temperature” for many cool-weather crops (like peas and lettuce) is roughly 5°C. Once soil remains consistently above this threshold, metabolic activity begins. Monitoring soil temperature with a simple probe is more accurate for planting windows than following calendar dates.
