Of course not many of us have gardens right on the beach, but many of the plants also grow well on windswept coastal gardens near the sea where growing Vegetables and Fruits in UK Seaside Gardens is often practised.
Vegetables
- Sea Kale: A hardy vegetable that thrives in coastal conditions. Its young shoots are blanched and eaten like asparagus.
- Good King Henry: A versatile leafy green that tolerates salt spray and poor soil.
- Perennial Kale: A hardy, cold-tolerant kale variety that can withstand harsh coastal conditions.
- Sea Beet: A salt-tolerant leafy green that can be used in salads or cooked like spinach.

Fruits
- Sea Buckthorn: A hardy shrub that produces orange berries rich in vitamins and antioxidants.
- Coastal Gooseberry: aka Coastal Black Gooseberry, Spreading gooseberry, Parish’s gooseberry, Straggly gooseberry. A hardy variety of gooseberry that I’m told can tolerate salt spray and strong winds. I have no personal experience of this so advise you to verify it.
- Coastal Apple: Certain apple varieties, such as ‘Discovery’ and ‘Spartan’, are more tolerant of coastal conditions.
Tips for Coastal Gardening:
- Protect young plants: Use windbreaks or cloches to protect young plants from harsh weather conditions.
- Improve soil quality: Add organic matter to the soil to improve its structure and drainage.
- Mulch: Use a thick layer of mulch to help retain moisture and protect the soil from wind and salt spray.
- Choose hardy varieties: Select plants that are known to be tolerant of coastal conditions.
- Water wisely: Water your plants regularly, especially during dry periods. But preferably ensure your crops root deep and find water.
- Consider container gardening: Growing plants in containers can provide better protection from harsh weather conditions and allow you to control the soil quality.
By following these tips and choosing the right plants, it is possible to create a beautiful and productive coastal garden.
