The Concept of Vavilov Centres
One of Vavilov’s most enduring contributions is the theory of Centres of Origin. He proposed that the greatest genetic diversity of a crop is found in the specific geographic region where it was first domesticated. By identifying these “Vavilov Centres,” he provided a map for future scientists to find the ancestral versions of modern crops. Nikolai Vavilov & The Law of Homologous Series
In 1920, Nikolai Vavilov formulated the Law of Homologous Series in Variation. He observed that closely related species often share similar patterns of genetic variation. This law allowed scientists to predict the existence of specific traits—such as a particular colour or resistance to a disease—in one species if it had already been observed in a relative. Today, this principle is a vital tool for geneticists using tools like CRISPR to “find and replace” genes across different crop species.
The World’s First Seed Bank
Vavilov established a massive seed repository in Leningrad, which contained over 250,000 samples by the 1940s. This was the first systematic attempt to create a global backup of plant life. This model is the direct ancestor of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway. These banks are essential today because they store “wild relatives” of crops that contain natural resistance to pests and droughts—traits that were often lost during the industrialisation of farming.
Contemporary Relevance and Food Security
Vavilov’s work is more relevant now than ever due to climate change. As growing conditions shift, commercial crops often fail because they are genetically uniform. Scientists use Vavilov’s maps to return to original domestication sites to find hardy, wild versions of these plants to cross-breed with modern varieties. This process, known as bio-fortification, also helps increase the nutritional density of staples like rice and maize to fight malnutrition.
Vavilov’s Historical Legacy and Sacrifice
Vavilov’s commitment to scientific truth ultimately cost him his life. He opposed the state-sponsored pseudo-science of Trofim Lysenko, who rejected modern genetics. Consequently, Vavilov was imprisoned and died of starvation in 1943. In a profound act of dedication, his colleagues at the Leningrad seed bank also chose to die of hunger during the 1941–1944 siege rather than eat the rice and tubers in their collection, ensuring the seeds survived for the benefit of future generations.
