Swales In Gardens & Allotments Can Capture, Store and Release Rainwater. Designed Properly They Can Also Act as A Terrace Feature That Increases Planting Area on Steep Land

Swales are earthworks designed to capture and slowly release rainwater. They are a valuable tool in sustainable veg gardening, landscaping and agriculture, offering numerous benefits including making cultivatable terrace space available on steep slopes. This article is about The Purpose of Swales and their benefits.

Swales In Gardens & Allotments Can Capture, Store and Release Rainwater. Designed Properly They Can Also Act as A Terrace That Increases Planting Area.

When it rains, much of the rain water often runs straight off the land into drains and ditches. If your land is prone to flooding this is welcomed but where the soil quickly dries out, rainfall is low or erosion is an issue then swales offer an opportunity to manage the situation more effectively.

I’m going to cover how to build a swale in another post, for now I am writing about the purpose of swales and below is a list of their benefits.

Benefits of Swales:

  1. Water Conservation:
    • Increased Infiltration: Swales slow down the flow of water, allowing it to infiltrate the soil more deeply.
    • Reduced Runoff: By reducing runoff, swales help to prevent soil erosion and nutrient loss.
    • Groundwater Recharge: Slowed water infiltration helps recharge groundwater supplies.
    • Increased Soil Moisture: Prevents drought conditions establishing (or at least not so fast).
  2. Soil Health:
    • Improved Soil Structure: The slow release of water encourages healthy soil structure and microbial activity.
    • Nutrient Retention: Nutrients that would otherwise be washed away are retained in the soil.
  3. Enhanced Plant Growth:
    • Consistent Moisture: Swales provide a steady supply of moisture to plants, even during dry periods. See Increased Soil Moisture above.
    • Reduced Need for Irrigation: By capturing and storing rainwater, swales can significantly reduce the need for supplemental irrigation or watering.
  4. Erosion Control:
    • Reduced Soil Erosion: Swales slow down the flow of water, reducing the erosive force of runoff. this is especially true on steep ground where rainwater running downhill can quickly erode channels and wash away top soil.
    • Sedimentation: The slowed water allows sediment to settle, preventing it from clogging waterways.
  5. Increased Growing Space / Terraces: On steep ground a series of swales can be used to create terraces that not only prevent erosion but also create level growing areas where silts and sediment can be collected to increase fertility.
  6. Aesthetic Appeal:
    • Natural Beauty: Swales can add a natural and organic look to a landscape.
    • Diverse Plant Life: The moist conditions created by swales can support a variety of plants, including native species.

By incorporating swales into your garden or allotment, you can manage water more effectively, grow more crops and create a more sustainable and resilient landscape.

Bioswales

Swales are similar to the bioswales that are sometimes constructed by civil engineers. The design is somewhat similar but the bioswale has a slightly different purpose, to remove sediment and pollutants.
