We hear so much about the greenhouse effect, climate change etc. But what if as gardeners we could do our part to reduce it? Rock dust, aka rock flour, might be part of the answer. Applying it to our garden and allotment soils is possible, and can, in certain circumstances, sequester Co2. Read more below.
Rock Dust Sequestration: The Chemical Process
Silicate weathering is a natural geological process that regulates Earth’s climate over millions of years. When silicate rocks are ground into dust, their surface area increases exponentially, speeding up the reaction with rainwater and atmospheric Co2.
- Carbonic Acid Formation: Rainwater absorbs atmospheric Co2 to form weak carbonic acid (H2Co3).
- Dissolution: As this slightly acidic water contacts rock dust, the silicate minerals dissolve.
- Ion Release: The reaction releases bicarbonate ions (HCo3) and calcium (Ca) or magnesium (Mg) ions.
- Storage: These ions wash into rivers and eventually the oceans, where they remain stored in dissolved form or precipitate as carbonate minerals (like limestone) on the seafloor for thousands of years.
Benefits to Farming
Beyond carbon sequestration, rock dust acts as a soil improver, which can incentivise adoption by the agricultural sector .. (and can be spread using the same equipment used to spread lime):

- pH Regulation: Basalt dust is alkaline and can replace traditional crushed limestone (calcite) to reduce soil acidity. Unlike agricultural lime, which releases Co2 when it reacts with acid, silicate rocks sequester it.
- Nutrient Provision: It slowly releases essential micronutrients and silica, which can strengthen plant cell walls and improve resistance to pests and drought.
- Crop Yields: Academic trials, such as those conducted by the University of Sheffield (Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation), have shown yield increases in various crops due to improved soil health.
Sequestration Potential and Limitations of Rock Dust
Research suggests that global application of rock dust to croplands could theoretically sequester 0.5 to 2 gigatonnes of Co2 per year. However, several variables impact its efficacy:

Academic and Historical Context
The concept is grounded in the Walker-Hays-Kasting model of the silicate-carbonate cycle. While historical geological data confirms the efficacy of natural weathering, large-scale agricultural deployment is still in the “scale-up” phase.
Uncertainties and Doubts:
- Verification: Measuring exactly how much Co2 has been sequestered in a specific field is technically challenging compared to forestry or Direct Air Capture (DAC).
- Heavy Metals: Some silicate rocks contain trace elements like nickel or chromium; long-term accumulation in soil requires rigorous monitoring to ensure food safety.
- Energy Intensity: The “net-zero” balance depends heavily on using renewable energy for the crushing and transport phases.
