Trees Capture Atmospheric Moisture, Create Water, Moderate Water Flow And Prevent Flooding, While Their Removal Leads To Drought And Flooding.

Knowing How Trees Prevent Flooding will help you understand plants better. And that is key to growing good crops and maintaining a healthy environment.

How Trees Prevent Flooding & Science Communicators

How Trees Prevent Flooding & alleviate Drought.

There’s one science communicator that I regularly turn to. Simply because he is superb at what he does. I’m thinking Andrew Millison. And though I always warn gardeners both sides of the Atlantic that they should be careful when listening to advice on pests and diseases, because they are very different, the basic principles Andrew describes are global truths. Physics is the same where we are on earth. And Andrew’s feet are firmly embedded in the earth!

The Trees Video

In this video Andrew describes how trees gather moisture and debris from the atmosphere and use it to feed the soil at their roots. Dust, bird droppings and much more are recycled by trees as you wil learn from this video.

It’s a video that goes back to basic concepts and in part describes how the top layer of the soil is reinforced with airborne debris that works alongside the leaves and other debris that falls from the trees. But has me considering far more than the trees contribution to soil. It covers how trees prevent erosion, gathers water at their roots and even contributes towards rainfall. It seems strange that trees can both stop floods and promote rainfall. But once we understand the basic science then we start to understand how each part of the plant contributes to the environment. I’ve written more on how plants work in another article which is linked here. But for now let’s look at how trees prevent flooding and cause rain.

Trees Video Highlights

In brief ….

How Trees Prevent Flooding

🌳 Trees act as a giant net, capturing moisture and nutrients from the atmosphere.
🌧️ Collected moisture drips to the soil, enriching it with nutrients as water is absorbed by tree roots.
🌊 Forests on hills store water, releasing it slowly, which moderates the water flow in the landscape.
☁️ Evapotranspiration from trees contributes to cloud formation and rainfall, showing the forest’s role in weather systems.
🌍 Deforestation disrupts the water cycle, leading to reduced rainfall and increased drought in inland areas.
🚨 The drought-flood cycle emerges from the removal of trees, causing erratic water flow and environmental instability.
🌱 Planting trees can help restore balance to the ecosystem and mitigate these issues.

Key Insights

Let me add a bit more detail to the above highlights ……

🌿 Moisture Capture: Trees have a significant surface area that allows them to capture humidity, proving essential in creating local precipitation. This process benefits both the trees and surrounding ecosystems.
🌧️ Nutrient Transport: As trees collect moisture, they also gather atmospheric particles that enrich the soil, highlighting the interconnectedness of tree health and soil quality.
🌊 Water Regulation: Forests act as natural sponges, slowing down water runoff and ensuring a steady water supply, which is vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems.
☁️ Cloud Formation: The particles released by trees serve as nuclei for raindrop formation, showcasing their critical role in the hydrological cycle and weather patterns.
🌍 Impact of Deforestation: The removal of trees disrupts the natural balance, leading to a decrease in rainfall and increased drought, highlighting the importance of forest preservation.
🚨 Drought-Flood Cycle: The cycle of drought and flooding caused by deforestation emphasises the need for sustainable land management to maintain environmental stability.
🌱 Restoration Potential: Replanting trees can reverse negative environmental impacts, underscoring the importance of proactive measures in conservation efforts. In Kenya the Masai are using trees and water management techniques to bring trees back into the landscape. The system is called “half moon”, it captures rainwater and drains it into the subsoil. More on that in another post.
