  • Beetroot: Harvest sowings that are now a good size.
  • Broad Beans: The main harvest for these will be finishing, but you can still pick the last pods before planting your next crop.
  • Broccoli: Both Calabrese and summer-sprouting varieties can be harvested now.
  • Carrots: Maincrop carrots sown earlier in the year will be ready.
  • Courgettes, Marrows & Summer Squash: These prolific plants will be at their peak, producing a continuous supply.
  • Cucumbers: Greenhouse and outdoor varieties will be ripening rapidly.
  • French Beans & Runner Beans: These will be producing a bumper crop.
  • Garlic: Most of the garlic sown last autumn will be ready to lift and dry. Many people have already harvested but later crop like these do very well.
  • Lettuce & Salad Leaves: Continue to pick leaves and sow successional crops for a continuous supply.
  • Onions: Onions planted earlier in the year should have their leaves turning yellow and falling over, indicating they are ready to be lifted and dried.
  • Peas & Mangetout: The last of the summer peas can be picked. But autumn peas are still possible if they were sown at the correct time.
  • Peppers & Chillies: These heat-loving crops will be ripening, especially in a greenhouse or a sheltered, sunny spot. Don’t forget they can be harvested green if you wish.
  • Potatoes: Maincrop varieties are ready for harvesting from late August onwards. Don’t be in a rush though. If the tops are still green they are still growing.
  • Sweetcorn: Look for the tassels on the cobs turning dark brown to know when they are ready.
  • Tomatoes: A key summer crop, with both greenhouse and outdoor varieties ripening beautifully.
  • Turnips: Young turnips can be harvested now.
