Is Winter Potato Planting In December or January Possible? Yes, But Only In The One Location As Explained In This Video.

I live in a very mild part of England but even here Winter Potato Planting In December or January is not a serious consideration. On the local plats spuds were planted in February but any earlier is not something I’d contemplate. But there is one location where potatoes have already been planted as I write this article on January 1st. 2025.

The location is on Jersey, in the Channels Islands and they will be in the UK shops in March if the weather is right. OK, so I know that, though these Jersey Royals will be mainly sold in the UK, Jersey isn’t actually part of the UK, it is a dependent territories of the British Crown and just off the French coastline.
But I find the way they are grown is fascinating and have previously written several articles on Jersey Royals and the Côtils.
Winter Potato Planting In December: The Video
Firstly, don’t try this on the UK mainland. Your potato crop will die!
Note how the potatoes are orientated within the row to ensure the chit is not damaged.
Note also that these potatoes are not planted deep as, if they were, they would be in colder soil and would either rot or not grow as fast.
Water is also withheld from the crop to begin with. This slows down weed growth and ensures less competition.
Planting density is also very high. This increases crop yield of small new potatoes. It doesn’t work for main crop potatoes.
