Cold temperatures, particularly frost, can stunt growth, damage the plants, or kill them outright. In my experience the temperatures they grow at/tolerate is also affected by humidity. But the tis a detailed article for another day and perhaps beyond the ability of amateur growers to achieve in their greenhouses. However, the timing of when to sow tomatoes largely depends on the temperatures you can provide both for germination and for the subsequent growth stages.
If you are in a location with mild winters and relatively consistent warmth, you may be able to sow tomatoes earlier in the season. However, if your area experiences frost and cold temperatures well into spring, you will need to adjust your sowing schedule accordingly OR provide expensive heat.
Early Sowing and Commercial Greenhouses
For commercial tomato growers, the ability to sow early is often key to maximising profits, especially in regions with shorter growing seasons. As I write this in January, some commercial growers in the UK are already harvesting tomatoes from crops sown the previous year. To achieve this early harvest, growers typically use high-tech greenhouses with advanced heating and lighting systems. These setups enable the cultivation of tomatoes in controlled, warm environments year-round, regardless of outdoor conditions. But it is VERY expensive.
For an amateur grower, replicating this environment is neither feasible nor practical for most people. Growing tomatoes at such an early stage would require significant investment in heating systems and artificial lighting, and a well-maintained greenhouse or conservatory with ample light. Even in such a setup, to achieve optimal growth, additional heating may be necessary during the night to maintain a consistent temperature.
The Alternative: Sowing Without Additional Heat
For those who do not have access to a heated greenhouse or a well-lit conservatory, growing tomatoes without additional heat is a viable option. In this case, sowing will need to be done later, when the risk of frost has passed and the temperatures are reliably warm. The key to success is creating a warm environment for the seeds to germinate. Without a heated propagator, you may want to start the seeds in a warm airing cupboard or on a sunny windowsill. Once germinated, the young plants can be moved to a larger space, such as a greenhouse or polytunnel, where they can continue to grow. Planting outdoors when the weather becomes warm enough to transplant them outdoors is another option. .
The main consideration here is the “last frost date” in your area, which will depend on your specific location and can vary from year to year. In colder regions, this could be as late as mid-May, while in milder areas, the risk of frost may end as early as April. It’s important to take into account your local climate and adapt your sowing schedule accordingly. The further north you are, or the higher the altitude, the later you’ll need to sow your tomatoes, and/or the more frost protection your plants will require.
Using a Heated Propagator for a More Controlled Start
Many amateur gardeners opt for using a heated propagator to give their tomatoes a head start. A propagator provides a warm, controlled environment where tomato seeds can germinate faster. This is especially useful in areas with cooler springs or shorter growing seasons. After germination, the seedlings can be transferred to a greenhouse or polytunnel. However, even if you use a propagator, you will still need to provide frost protection, especially in the first few weeks after transplanting the seedlings.
To ensure a successful start, it is preferable to maintain a temperature of at least 65°F (18°C) in the propagator. If you are using a greenhouse or polytunnel, you may need to employ additional heating methods, such as electric heaters or oil-fired heaters, to keep the temperature above freezing. Many growers set their heaters to a minimum temperature of around 50-55°F (10-13°C) during the night to prevent plants from becoming too cold. Other sort then even higher to ensure faster growth.
I owned a commercial tomato operation in Bedfordshire, UK, where we grew 10,000 tomato plants annually. Our operation was not high-tech, but it was well-managed. The earliest we could reliably plant tomatoes in unheated greenhouses was around April 10th. Before that, there was a real risk of frost, and any young plants exposed to freezing temperatures would perish. To mitigate this, we used large oil-fired heaters, which allowed us to maintain a minimum temperature of around 50°F during the night in those critical early weeks..
Even with these precautions, the weather did not always cooperate. One year, in mid-April, we awoke to find snow on the greenhouse roofs. It was a reminder that last frost and snow dates do not always follow the rules, and sudden cold snaps can catch even the most prepared growers off guard.
Some amateur growers put fleece over their crops when cold nights threaten. It isn’t foolproof but can break a few degrees of frost so is a useful technique.
Temperature and Germination: How Low Can You Go?
While it is commonly advised to maintain optimal germination temperatures of 70-85°F (21-29°C) for tomatoes, they are surprisingly resilient and can still germinate at lower temperatures—though at a much slower rate. In fact, many gardeners have witnessed tomato seeds germinating in the ground or greenhouse even when temperatures are lower than the recommended range.
For example, in greenhouses, where last year’s tomatoes may have dropped seeds onto the floor, these seeds can germinate on their own in early spring, even without the higher temperatures typically considered necessary for germination. This demonstrates that while higher temperatures speed up the process, tomatoes are capable of growing under a wider range of conditions than we often give them credit for.
