Earthworms, of which there are many species, play and incredibly important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. But what is the Lifecycle of Earthworms? How often do they breed? How long does it take an earthworm to reach maturity? What types of earthworms should we think about in a gardening situation? There are dozens of earthworm questions to ask and answer and this article was written to answer many of them.

Earthworms are segmented creatures, with smooth, muscular bodies. They eat bacteria when they first hatch but soon move on to eating organic matter. Hence they improve soil structure, fertility, drainage etc. Earthworms have a strange anatomy, with ten hearts and no bladder. They are hermaphodites, though some display parthenogenesis (breeding without fertilisation). Over 6000 named species of earthworms exist globally and several types of earth worms exist.
This article discusses earthworms generally rather than specifically as, with 600 species, many variations exist. For example, most earthworms are a few inches long. But there are some species that reach a metre in length!
Three Types of Earthworm
The three basic types of worm are ….
Leaf litter / composting (epigeic) worms
Topsoil dwelling (endogeic) worms
Deep burrowing (anecic) worms.

The Earthworm’s Anatomy
An earthworm’s body is divided into segments, each containing essential organs. Key anatomical features include:
- Clitellum: A thickened band around the body that secretes a mucus cocoon for egg-laying.
- Setae: Tiny bristles on each segment that aid in movement.
- Digestive System: A simple digestive tract, including a mouth, pharynx, esophagus, crop, gizzard, intestine, and anus.
- Circulatory System: A closed circulatory system with multiple hearts to pump blood throughout the body.
- Nervous System: A simple nervous system with a brain and a ventral nerve cord.
- Reproductive System: Earthworms are hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female reproductive organs.
The Earthworm’s Life Cycle
The life cycle of an earthworm involves several stages:
- Mating: Two earthworms align their bodies and exchange sperm.
- Cocoon Formation: The clitellum secretes a mucus cocoon that slides forward, picking up eggs and sperm.
- Fertilization: Fertilization occurs within the cocoon.
- Hatching: After several weeks, tiny worm hatchlings emerge from the cocoon.
Earthworms generally reach sexual maturity in around 90 days. So numbers can increase very quickly where conditions suit them However, importing earthworms in a bid to increase numbers, will fail if the conditions are unsuitable. A major factor on their breeding success is the amount of food available to them. Without it they will not increase in numbers!
The Earthworm’s Role in the Ecosystem
Earthworms are often called “nature’s farmers” due to their significant contributions to soil health:
- Soil Aeration: As they burrow through the soil, earthworms create tunnels that improve aeration and drainage.
- Nutrient Cycling: Earthworms ingest organic matter, such as decaying leaves and plant material, and excrete nutrient-rich castings.
- Soil Structure Improvement: Earthworm burrows and castings help to improve soil structure, making it more fertile and better able to retain water.
- Decomposition: Earthworms play a crucial role in the decomposition of organic matter, accelerating nutrient cycling.
Earthworm Behavior and Ecology
Earthworms are primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to feed and mate. They are sensitive to light, moisture, and temperature.
- Feeding: Earthworms feed on decaying organic matter, including plant debris, animal remains, and microorganisms. They ingest soil to extract nutrients.
- Burrowing: Earthworms create intricate burrow systems, which can vary in depth and complexity depending on the species and soil conditions.
- Estivation: During periods of drought or extreme heat, earthworms may enter a state of dormancy called estivation. They aestivate. Note the change of spelling!
The Importance of Earthworms
Earthworms are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Their activities contribute to soil fertility, plant growth, and water retention. Understanding their biology and ecology helps gardeners appreciate their essential role in our environment and take steps to protect them.
Conservation Efforts
To protect earthworm populations, it’s important to avoid practices that harm the soil ecosystem, such as excessive use of pesticides and herbicides.
Organic farming practices, which promote soil health and biodiversity, are beneficial for earthworm populations. Additionally, creating compost piles and leaf litter can provide valuable habitat and food sources for earthworms.
Digging destroys their burrows and exposes them to birds. We’ve only to look at the number of gulls behind the plough to understand the number of worms devoured by birds when fields are ploughed. No dig protects worms.
