Professor Lorna Dawson is Head of Forensic Soil Science At The James Hutton Institute In Aberdeen Where She Uses Soil To Solve Crimes.
Today I’m combining my passion for soil with my love of crime and forensic science thrillers. It’s not a gardening video but I suspect many gardeners will still enjoy it. In the video Prof Dawson shows how soil helped her to provide the evidence of a crime that took place when she was an undergraduate years before. It is the story of Soil, The Silent Witness.
She shows how soil can be used to pin point the exact crime location from samples taken years before.
I believe it likely that the DNA from soil bacteria and fungi will soon be used to pinpoint crime locations to within inches. I believe every square metre of soil has a totally unique DNA fungal and bacterial “fingerprint“ and this will soon be used in crime detection.
