Should Leaves Be Removed? It causes so many online arguments, in many cases based on nothing but folklore, myth and legend. As amateurs we are at the mercy of online myth, clickbait and rumour. We are often told to ask one of the “old guys” because they have been doing it for years. But doing something for years doesn’t mean they have done it correctly for years.

As someone of advanced years I am one of the old guys. The difference is I also spent years as a commercial grower, undertook many verifiable research trials with qualified researchers and I rely on the science. So here is my Should Leaves Be Removed objective advice … with all the science plus my observations.

The Gardener’s Guide to Plant Energy: Why Leaves are Non-Negotiable

For British gardeners and horticultural professionals, the debate over defoliation often pits aesthetic preference against biological necessity. When examining the physiological ecology of a plant, the solar panel analogy moves from a simple metaphor to a strict scientific rule.

The Biological Solar Array

Leaves are not merely decorative; they are complex biological machines designed for photosyntheisis. Inside every leaf, chloroplasts act as the individual cells of a solar panel, capturing photons to drive the Calvin Cycle. Research in the Annals of Botany confirms that a plant’s carbon budget is strictly dictated by its total leaf area. Just as removing a solar panel reduces the total kilowatt-hour potential of a domestic array, removing a healthy, sun-lit leaf reduces the total energy available for root expansion and fruit saccharification.

What the Research Says

When you strip the panels, the plant enters a state of physiological debt. The seminal paper Plant Responses to Defoliation by Briske and Richards demonstrates that leaf removal triggers an instantaneous reduction in whole-plant photosynthesis. Within thirty-six to forty-eight hours of losing leaves, root growth often slows or stops entirely as the plant is forced to drain its battery of stored carbohydrates in the roots to try and regrow its lost panels. In other words removing leaves prompts the plant to attempt to grow more leaves.

Furthermore, a 2024 study in MDPI Horticulturae found that intense defoliation led to a significant decrease in fruit yield. While the remaining leaves tried to work harder through a process called photosynthetic upregulation, they could not fully compensate for the missing surface area.

Personal Choice versus Scientific Necessity

In the often overcast British climate, light is a premium resource. While some thinning is a personal choice, it should only be done when the horticultural return on investment justifies the energy loss. For instance, removing diseased foliage to prevent the spread of Late Blight is equivalent to removing a faulty panel to prevent the whole array from short-circuiting. Similarly, removing yellowing or senescent leaves is logical because they often consume more energy through respiration than they produce, acting like a broken panel that leaks power back into the grid. Finally, removing a leaf that is completely shading a ripening fruit truss can be justified as sacrificing one panel to ensure the end product reaches the necessary maturity.

But of course the truss of fruit doesn’t need light to ripen, it needs warmth.

And blight can be prevented by adequate ventilation that doesn’t necessitate leaf removal. Blight is caused by the humidity being high enough for the blight “spores’ to germinate and grow. Control temperature and humidity and blights ceases to be an issue.

Commercial Growers Remove Leaves!

True, commercial growers do remove tomato leaves. But they do it in a restrained way so as not to upset the growth equilibrium. On. my nursery we removed leaves up to the ripening truss and never beyond. This was done for a very good reason. When you have 10,000 plants and harvesting over a ton of fruit a day speedy picking is necessary. So we removed a few leaves so we could see the ripening fruit.

In the image above you will see layered tomatoes where the stems are totally devoid of leaves. But these are below the level at which picking is taking place and the stems could be 20-30 long! Growing a few toms at home Is a totally different situation and this is one time when I suggest you ignore what commercial growers do.

The consensus in academic horticulture is clear: leaf area is directly proportional to potential energy gain. Arbitrary defoliation is an energy tax that the plant may not be able to afford, especially during the shorter British growing season. Before you prune, consider whether there is a documented threat, such as disease or severe shading, that justifies losing that specific unit of energy production. If there is no clear threat, removing healthy leaves is simply a way of turning off your own power supply.
