In the UK, drainage and soil temperature can also be deciding factors due to the temperate maritime climate.
There are of course frequent arguments about the use of raised beds versus growing on the flat. And No Dig brings in another discussion that often gets heated! I spent years as a commercial grower growing crops the traditional way “on the flat”. Later I moved to no Dig. So I have experienced both and believe you must decide for yourself. So, the following is an objective assessment of some of the pros and cons. Read it and decide for yourself!
1. Raised Beds
Raised beds are structures built above the natural soil level, typically 15–30cm high.

- Best For: Poorly draining clay soils or sites with contaminated ground.
- Advantages:
- Drainage & Warming: Soil warms faster in spring and drains more freely than heavy ground soil.
- Soil Control: You can import specific loam/compost mixes tailored to your crops. Having said that, in reality few crops need special soil mixes
- Ergonomics: Higher beds reduce back strain and prevent soil compaction by eliminating foot traffic. But paths need to be wide if you want to get a wheelbarrow between high beds
- Disadvantages:
- Cost: Initial expenditure for timber (ideally FSC-certified larch or oak) or masonry.
- Watering: They dry out significantly faster during dry spells, requiring more frequent irrigation.
- Cooling: Raised beds cool quicker in autumn and catch the frost and winds more in winter

2. In-Ground Beds (Traditional Plots)
Growing directly in the earth, either dug or, more often these days using the “no-dig” method to preserve soil structure.
- Best For: Large-scale vegetable production and gardeners on a budget.
- Advantages:
- Cost-Effective: Zero infrastructure costs.
- Moisture Retention: Deep roots can access natural groundwater, making plants more resilient during summer droughts.
- Natural Biota: Easier integration with existing earthworm populations and mycorrhizal networks.
- Disadvantages:
- Pests: It is often claimed that it is harder to exclude slugs and snails compared to physical barriers. But there are also fewer places for them to hide!
- Soil Limitations: If your garden sits on heavy London clay or thin chalky soil, soil amndement is necessary on a very regular basis.
3. Alternative Approaches

Decision Framework
To determine the best approach for your specific site, evaluate these factors:
- Drainage Test: Dig a hole 30cm deep, fill it with water, and see how long it takes to drain. If it takes more than 24 hours, raised beds are a potential solution … unless you can drain the land. NB The drainage speed often varies between summer and winter due to moisture content and water table level.
- Budget: In-ground gardening is the cheapest entry point. If the soil is poor, “no-dig” mulching with well-rotted manure is often more cost-effective than building beds. Don’t be put off by those that stay No Dig is expensive .. it isn’t if done correctly.
- Longevity: Permanent raised beds are an investment in the property; containers are portable for those in rental accommodation.

Research Note: Current horticultural data from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) suggests that while raised beds are popular, in-ground “no-dig” systems (pioneered by Charles Dowding) are often more sustainable for long-term carbon sequestration in British soils.
