Most gardeners are amazed to find they are already growing guilds in their garden or allotment. Ot even in their greenhouse, because there are tomato plant guilds in greenhouses and fruit treee guilds outside. In fact anywhere we grow two or more plants together wr potentially have a plant guild.

What Are Plant Guilds?

Plant guilds are a core concept in permaculture, a system of agricultural design that seeks to create sustainable and self-sufficient ecosystems. Essentially, a plant guild is a harmonious grouping of different plant species (and sometimes even animals) that are chosen to mutually benefit each other, creating a mini-ecosystem where they support each other’s growth, health, and productivity.

So that means when you plant basil and/or marigolds with your tomatoes you have planted a plant guild.

Think of it as companion planting taken to the next level, often involving perennial plants and aiming to mimic the natural relationships found in healthy forests or wild ecosystems. Instead of planting crops in monocultures (large areas of a single crop), plant guilds leverage biodiversity to create a more resilient and productive system.

But they needn’t be small scale. A small woodland or huge forest is essentially a plant guild. Certainly if you look at our community food forest it is a mass of overlapping plant guilds that merge and meld together to form a single plant guild .. or many. It is rather like a fractal really!

How Plant Guilds Work

Plant guilds are designed by selecting plants that perform specific functions that benefit the entire group, often centered around a “main” plant (like a fruit tree). Common roles plants play in a guild include:

  • Central Element: Usually a productive plant like a fruit tree, nut tree, or large shrub that forms the core of the guild. But could equally be a tomato plant!
  • Nitrogen Fixers: Plants (often legumes like clover, beans, or peas) that have a symbiotic relationship with bacteria in their roots. These bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form usable by plants, essentially providing natural fertiliser for the whole guild.
  • Dynamic Accumulators: Plants with deep taproots (like comfrey or dandelion) that can draw up nutrients and minerals from deeper in the soil that are unavailable to shallower-rooted plants. When these plants die back or are “chopped and dropped” (cut and left on the soil surface), these accumulated nutrients become available to other plants in the guild. So it pays to harvest these plants from time to time. We have a lot of dandelions in our food forest and they are there on purpose.
  • Pest Deterrents/Repellents: Plants that emit strong scents or chemicals (like marigolds, garlic, or chives) can allegedly confuse or deter common pests, reducing the need for chemical pesticides.
  • Pollinator Attractors: Flowering plants (like borage, calendula, or sunflowers) that attract beneficial insects like bees and butterflies, which are crucial for pollinating fruiting plants and increasing yields. They can also attract predatory insects that prey on garden pests.
  • Groundcovers/Living Mulch: Low-growing plants (like strawberries, thyme, or clover) that cover the soil, suppressing weeds, reducing water evaporation, keeping the soil cool, and preventing erosion.
  • Support Plants/Trellises: Taller, sturdy plants (like corn in the “three sisters” guild) that can provide physical support for climbing plants.
  • Biomass Producers: Plants that grow quickly and produce a lot of organic matter, which can be chopped and dropped to add nutrients and organic mater that improves soil structure and carbon sequestration. .

Benefits of Plant Guilds

Plant guilds help the soil and garden in various ways as described below.

  • Improved Soil Health: Nitrogen fixers, dynamic accumulators, and biomass producers contribute to soil fertility and structure. The diverse root systems also help aerate the soil.
  • Pest and Disease Management: By attracting beneficial insects and deterring pests naturally, guilds reduce the reliance on chemical interventions. Increased biodiversity makes the system more resilient to outbreaks.
  • Water Conservation: Groundcover plants act as a living mulch, reducing evaporation and keeping the soil moist for longer.
  • Increased Productivity and Yields: The synergistic relationships between plants lead to healthier, more vigorous growth and often higher yields.
  • Reduced Maintenance: Once established, guilds can be remarkably self-sufficient, requiring less weeding, watering, and fertilizing.
  • Enhanced Biodiversity: Guilds create diverse habitats for a variety of insects, microbes, and wildlife, contributing to a healthier overall ecosystem.
  • Maximising Space: By layering different plants with different needs and growth habits, guilds make efficient use of vertical and horizontal space, especially in smaller gardens.mFor example hops can trail up through trees and take up very little floor area.
  • Resilience: A diverse plant community is generally more resilient to environmental stresses and challenges.

Examples of Plant Guilds in Gardens

  • The “Three Sisters” (Classic Native American Guild): Corn (provides a stalk for beans to climb), beans (fix nitrogen for the corn and squash), and squash (provides ground cover, suppresses weeds, and conserves moisture).
  • Fruit Tree Guild: A fruit tree (like an apple or peach) as the central element, surrounded by plants such as:
    • Nitrogen fixers: Legumes such as Caragana arborescent, clover, fava beans, and sea buckthorns, as well as trees like alders, false acacia, and laburnums
    • Dynamic accumulators: Comfrey, yarrow, dandelion.
    • Pest deterrents: Garlic, chives, marigolds. … I’m never convinced these are as good as some people claim!
    • Pollinator attractors: Borage, calendula, dill, foxgloves, daffodils, primroses etc.
    • Groundcovers: Strawberries (we have wild strawberries, “garden” strawberries & Italian Whites), thyme, mint, densely sown peas etc.
  • Tomato Guild: Tomato plant (central), basil (pest deterrent, alleged flavour enhancer), marigolds (pest deterrent), oregano (attracts beneficial insects), thyme (groundcover).

Plant guilds are a fundamental aspect of permaculture, offering a sustainable and effective way to garden by working with nature rather than against it. They can standalone as mini food forests, be built around linear food forest or merge together into a large fractal like complex.

Distinction from Companion Planting

A plant guild can be defined as a method of cultivating plants in synergistic groups that emulate natural habitats. This approach leverages the inherent diversity of plant species and their varied ecological roles to support overall plant health while simultaneously minimising human intervention and external inputs. It constitutes a “purposely designed planting strategy method” that orchestrates a micro-ecosystem of compatible plant species, each assigned a specific, supportive function within the guild … see above for examples. 

The central tenet of a plant guild is the establishment of a community where plants mutually support one another through a multitude of beneficial interactions. These interactions encompass vital ecological processes such as nutrient recycling, provision of shade, conservation of water, attraction of beneficial insects, deterrence of pests, enhancement of soil structure, and prevention of erosion.   

Many of us believe that the concept of plant guilds is often confused with, yet distinctly differs from, companion planting. While companion planting involves pairing two or more plants that offer mutual benefits, often focusing on immediate crop advantages such as pest deterrence, plant guilds represent a more advanced and long-term design strategy. Guilds often focus more on perennial species, establishing a resilient landscape that evolves over many years. This contrasts with companion planting, which frequently involves annual plants and more easily modifiable schemes. The distinction extends beyond mere plant longevity; it reflects a fundamental shift in design philosophy. Companion planting often focuses on optimising individual plant performance through simple, direct associations. Conversely, plant guilds aim to construct a complex, multi-functional, and self-regulating micro-ecosystem, typically centered around a primary perennial species, such as a fruit tree, and designed to mimic the layered structures found in natural forests. This broader ecological perspective implies a transition from optimising discrete pairings to enhancing the overall system’s health, resilience, and long-term sustainability.
