Photoblastic Seeds (Those Whose Germination Is Influenced By Light) Do Not Require A Specific “Dosage” In The Same Way A Plant Needs Daily Sunlight For Photosynthesis. Instead, Light Acts As A Physiological Trigger.

This is a topic that is poorly understood by many gardeners and hence this article about photoblastic seeds. For most positively photoblastic seeds, the requirement is surprisingly minimal.
In this article you will see that lettuce are photoblastic. From that you might believe they need a lot of light to germinate. The reality is somewhat different. AS a grower of half a million lettuce a year we germinated our seed in the dark. The act of putting seeds into the seed trays or soil blocks was sufficient to trigger the seed to germinate. It would then germinate as soon as we gave it the moisture and warmth it needed.

Light Intensity and Duration
While requirements vary by species, the general thresholds identified in botanical research (such as studies on Lactuca sativa (lettuce) or Digitalis purpurea (foxgloves) are remarkably low:
- Intensity: Seeds can often be triggered by as little as 0.1 to 100 lux. For context, a brightly lit office is roughly 500 lux, and direct summer sunlight can exceed 100,000 lux.
- Duration: A burst of light lasting only a few milliseconds can be sufficient to initiate the germination process in some species, though most gardeners find that a few hours of ambient light ensures a more uniform “hit” rate.
- Wavelength: The specific quality of light is more important than the quantity. Seeds respond to Red light (approx. 660nm), which converts the protein phytochrome into its active form, signaling the seed to wake up. Conversely, Far-red light (approx. 730nm) can inhibit germination.
Categories of Photoblastism
The amount of light “needed” depends entirely on which category the seed falls into:

Practical Application for Sowing
Because these seeds are so sensitive, the standard horticultural advice for positively photoblastic seeds is:
- Surface Sow: Do not bury the seeds. Press them gently into the surface of the moist compost to ensure contact.
- Use Vermiculite: If you must cover them to maintain humidity, use a very thin layer of fine vermiculite, which allows light to penetrate while holding moisture.
- Avoid Deep Shade: While they don’t need a high-intensity grow light, placing them in a dark cupboard or under a heavy mulch will prevent the light trigger from reaching the phytochrome.
I don’t fully subscribe to the above. In reality I only used vermiculite on celery seed as they are like dust (17,000 seed / gram). This was to retain moisture and not for light reasons. And if light is so important to lettuce, why are so many commercial lettuce seed produced as pelleted seed? Putting the seed inside a clay shell makes no sense if light is critical.
Note on Reliability: These findings are based on established plant physiology regarding the Phytochrome System. While many recent gardening blogs suggest “12 hours of light,” academic sources confirm that for the initial trigger, the actual exposure time required is often a fraction of that.
