Managing Desert Rains To Grow Crops Means Rajasthan Is No Longer Arid. Crops Are Plentiful Due To Water Management.

Farmers in the Thar desert area of Rajasthan have transformed an arid land into thriving agricultural regions through innovative water management, enhancing groundwater and community resilience. Crops now flourish due to working with nature and nurturing the local landscape. Unlike my last article about Africa’s Green Belt, where half moon swales were dotted across the landscape, in Rajasthan they are harnessing the whole landscape to harvest water. The flat plains are being used as retaining structures field by field with carefully constructed, but very simple, water management systems.
Managing Desert Rains in Rajasthan
The beauty of the water management system in Rajasthan is that it comes from the grass roots and not from distant government offices. Local villagers do all the work and each village then links their system to the next village. It is a system designed from the ground up and has seen numerous lakes in the desert and, incredibly, a rise in the level of the water table.

Like Africa’s Green Belt the problem here isn’t a desert without any rain, they have a wet season. It is the inability of the land to naturally harvest the excess water that comes in a very short monsoon period. This is partly natural but has been exacerbated by poor agricultural practices in the past. The corner has however now been turned and the local farmers have demonstrated how their chuaka system is able to collect water, retain in in nature aquifers BEFORE if can flow away and then use it to maintain crop growth for long periods. They now have the resilience to survive drought even where it might be prolonged over several years.
There is now an abundance of groundwater that has transformed the flash flooding of the monsoon season and shortage in the dry season. They now have carefully managed water all year. Part of the process has been to build bunds around every field, to plant them with trees to maintain their structure and stability and to interconnect each local system so that it provides greater regional resilience. It works on a human scale because everyone that participates gains from it. Villagers are bonded in shared goals and there is renewed economic growth in an area that has traditionally been poor. The advent of sufficient water has seen agricultural crop diversity with wheat, mustard, gram, barley, guar, moth, sorghum, groundnuts, pearl millet, soyabeans, plus a wide range of spices, aromatics and medicinal plants.
The chauka system has traditionally been employed to capture rainwater in Rajasthan. It consisted of pits to capture monsoon rain that could then percolate into the aquifer. But it was relatively small scale. What is now being done has scaled up the traditional chuaka system and made it field scale.
One key change that is being seen is that the climate is beginning to change. The projects are now expanding from a start 40 years ago and as they expand the trees bring shade that drops overall soil temperatures. This is then reflected in lower air temperatures, reduced transpiration which, coupled with improved groundwater levels makes a huge change to the local environment. Locally biodiversity has also improved due to the increase in trees that leads to a greater diversity of ground cover.
It should be noted that the field scale rain capture systems aren’t the only rainwater gathering mechanism used in the Thar desert. Every house employs a traditional paar or taanka system. This consists of a large underground cistern and the means to remove silt etc as the water is collected from the roof and paved areas around each house.
