To prevent plants from becoming “leggy”—a condition known as etiolation – we have to get the imbalance between light, temperature, and nutrition right. In British climates, this problem is particularly common during early spring when indoor temperatures are high but natural light levels remain low.

Why Etiolation Occurs

Etiolation is a survival mechanism. When a plant perceives low light levels, it prioritises rapid vertical growth to “reach” for a light source. This results in long, weak stems with small, pale leaves and elongated internodes (the space between leaves).

How to Prevent Leggy Seedlings

Maximise Light: Seedlings require intense, overhead light. A south-facing windowsill often provides directional light, causing plants to lean. Use LED or T5 fluorescent grow lights positioned 5–10cm above the plants for 14–16 hours a day.

Regulate Temperature: High heat encourages rapid growth. If light levels are low, keep the environment cooler (around 15–18°C) to slow the growth rate, allowing for slower growth as we wait for better light. This possibly encourages the stem to thicken rather than stretch, though l think the jury is out on this one.

Mechanical Stimulation via Air Movement: Utilising an oscillating fan to simulate a consistent breeze induces a thigmomorphogenic response in the specimen. This physiological adaptation occurs as mechanical stress triggers a redistribution of growth hormones and increased lignification of the xylem vessels. The resulting increase in radial stem diameter and reduced apical elongation ensures a structurally robust plant, better equipped to withstand the environmental pressures of outdoor transplantation.

Delay Sowing: Avoid the temptation to sow too early in the year (January/February) unless you have supplemental lighting. Waiting for the longer days of March ensures more natural photons.

How to Fix Leggy Plants

If your seedlings have already stretched, you can often save them depending on the species. Provided they are not too leggy. 

The Deep Planting Method

This is highly effective for Tomatoes, Peppers, and Chillies. These plants can grow “adventitious roots” along their stems.

The Process: Prick out the seedling and transplant it into a deeper pot. Bury the stem right up to the first set of true leaves (the pair above the seed leaves/cotyledons).

The Result: The buried stem will sprout new roots, creating a sturdier, more vigorous root system.

 Beware … when buried with the cotyledons buried two sideshoots may develop as secondary stems! They are sometimes called “walking sticks”. 

Physical Support and Pinching

For species that do not grow roots from stems (such as most brassicas or flowers):

Staking: Sometimes it is possible to use a small split cane and a soft tie to support the stem until it thickens.

Pinching Out: Once the plant has 2–3 sets of true leaves, pinch off the growing tip. This redirects energy to the lateral buds, encouraging “bushy” rather than “leggy” growth.

Potting Up Sturdy Seedlings

Move the plant to a larger container. This allows you to bury the stem slightly deeper (though be careful with plants prone to stem rot, like cucumbers) and provides fresh nutrients to support thicker cell walls.
