There are Five Different Rotavator Types. This Is How To Choose The Best Size And Power Source For Your Plot.

Rotavators are categorised primarily by their power source and the position of the tines. Selecting the correct type depends on soil type, garden size, and the physical effort required to operate the machinery. They range from handheld battery powered to those mounted on a tractor and powered by the Power Take Off (PTO) Shaft. Prices vary as does quality, so choosing correctly is important.

These days I tend towards not using a rotator at all as they can create many soil based issues, but some people swear by them. So, using the right one at the right time is important.

The type chosen depends on your soil type, heavy clay is so much harder to cultivate than a light sandy soil. Which means a have clay soil needs a more robust machine and a power source that can cope with it. Lightweight handheld machines are unlikely to cope well with heavy clay. But choosing a tractor mounted rotavator is both very expensive and overkill for small plots.

As a commercial grower I used a rear-tined petrol-powered Honda rotavator. I used this in my 14ft wide tunnels and smaller greenhouses. It was 5.5 hp, nearly a metre wide and similar matches cost around £1000 today. It was an excellent machine and I would recommend looking at Hondas for robust machines.

In my bigger greenhouses, 18ft wide tunnels and outdoors I used a Kubota L series tractor and a 50inch Howard PTO driven rotavator. The tractor, today, is around £25,000 and the rotavator around £2500, if bought new.

But what are the options for gardeners and those with an allotment?

Hand-Held Electric Cultivators

These are lightweight, corded or battery machines designed for small borders and raised beds.

  • Advantages: They offer high portability and are easy to store in small sheds. Maintenance is minimal compared to petrol engines, and they represent the most affordable entry point for domestic gardeners.
  • Disadvantages: Range is strictly limited by the length of the power cable. They often lack the torque required to penetrate compacted clay or virgin soil, making them better suited for mixing in loose compost.
  • To be honest, unless the soil is already dug, this is unlikely to help much! The clue is in the name, they are cultivators, not rotavators. They can stir soil, not dig it! Price, under £100.

Cordless Battery Rotovators

Modern lithium-ion models provide the convenience of electric power without the tether of a cable.

  • Advantages: These offer excellent manoeuvrability for navigating around established plants. They are significantly quieter than petrol alternatives, which is beneficial for urban environments.
  • Disadvantages: Battery runtime typically ranges from 20 to 40 minutes, which may be insufficient for larger allotments. They often lack the downward mass needed to penetrate hard-baked earth effectively. Again the price starts under £100 but don’t expect to turn hard soil. They tend to mix well dug soil but not dig virgin soil.

Front-Tine Petrol Rotovators

In these models, the engine sits directly over the tines, which pull the machine forward as they rotate. They have a leg at the back that digs in to stop control forward movement. Once you get the knack of controlling them they are easy to use.

  • Advantages: They are versatile enough for incorporating light weeds or light tilling while remaining more compact and easier to transport than rear-tine models.
  • Disadvantages: They can “skit” across the surface of hard ground, requiring significant upper-body strength to control. The depth of tilling is often inconsistent compared to heavier machinery.

Rear-Tine Petrol Rotovators

These heavy-duty machines feature engine-driven wheels with tines located at the rear, often protected by a safety guard.

  • Advantages: The driven wheels provide consistent traction and pace, making them easier to handle on large plots. Models with Counter-Rotating Tines (CRT) are particularly effective at breaking new, heavy ground. Many makes have a rotor hood with means the soil thrown against it will break up very well.
  • Disadvantages: Their bulk makes them difficult to turn in confined spaces, and they require substantial storage. They also involve higher capital investment and regular mechanical maintenance of spark plugs and filters.
  • The oldest one of these I owned was a Howard Gem. It was brute of a heavy machine to handle in a confined space but did an excellent job.
  • This machine is capable of controlling couchgrass, bindweed etc as it chops it so small it struggles to survive. Rotavate, wait a few weeks for new growth, rotavate again. Repeat a few times and few weeds survive. They become exhausted by the repeated chopping.

Tractor Mounted Rotovators

These are implements powered by a tractor’s Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft, typically used for very large gardens, paddocks, or smallholdings.

  • Advantages: They provide the highest level of power and can till large areas to a precise depth with minimal physical effort from the operator. They are the most efficient method for preparing extensive seedbeds or incorporating heavy green manure.
  • Disadvantages: Use is restricted by the size and accessibility of the tractor. They are significantly more expensive than pedestrian units and require knowledge of three-point linkage systems and PTO safety.
  • This is the ultimate tool for destroying couch grass, nettles, bindweed etc. Weeds cannot survive being repeatedly hit with these machines several times a season.

Note on Soil Health & Rotavators

Heavy use of rotavators can lead to “pan” (a hard layer of soil just below the tilling depth) and undoubtedly disrupts mycorrhizal networks and earthworm populations. Academic horticultural sources generally recommend rotovating only when necessary, such as during the initial creation of a bed or when incorporating large volumes of organic matter.

Having used these machines professionally I know they have a place in soil cultivation in some instances. But, I suggest moderating their use and going No Dig where you can. My 70+ years of experience is talking here and I know Choosing the Right Rotavator sometimes means not choosing one at all.
