Her’s another evocative farming and rural life film from along ago. I was born and now live again in the south of Devon, not far from the sea and where this was filmed. In some ways life has changed forever, but in other ways little has changed! The weather is just the same, in fact it seems to be getting fiercer with winds and flooding becoming more common.
Winter Embraces Rural Life
The film opens with a coastal village battling winter’s grip, today it’s not so cold in winter but the coast can be unforgiving. Rather than farming the film starts with the Coast Guard’s vital role in weather forecasting and maritime safety. Then the challenges of farming in harsh conditions are brought to life. Children, wrapped in warm clothing, share the joy of newborn lambs and the resilience of rural life in a beautiful but bleak landscape.
Spring Awakening
As winter recedes, the landscape transforms. The documentary captures the delicate beauty of spring, from blossoming hedgerows to the birth of new lambs. The rhythm of farm life quickens, with sowing, tending livestock, and preparing for the summer ahead.
Summer’s Bounty
Summer arrives, bringing with it the promise of harvest. The film showcases the hard work involved in gathering the year’s bounty, from the wheat fields to the orchards. Amidst the labor, there’s time for play and enjoyment as the children explore the coast and savour the taste of summer.

Autumn’s Harvest
As the days shorten, the landscape shifts again. The focus turns to the apple harvest, the preparation of winter feed, and the gathering of fuel for the coming cold months. The documentary captures the changing colours of the countryside and the sense of anticipation for the year ahead.
Is This A Rural Life Finale?
This heartwarming film is a testament to the enduring spirit of a rural community. It celebrates the cyclical nature of life, the beauty of the natural world, and the resilience of those who call this coastal village home. Those times will never return.
