A permaculture inspired food forest mimics a natural woodland, layering plants to create a self-sustaining ecosystem whilst an allotment is allotter different. But how do these two systems compare when we consider every square metre of a plot? A detailed analysis of their yields … accounting for real-world land use … reveals a fascinating trade-off between immediate gains and long-term, space-efficient resilience.
The Weight of the Harvest: Cultivated Beds v Overall Plot Reality
When measuring the sheer weight of edible produce from a cultivated bed, the allotment appears to be the undisputed short-term winner. A well-managed allotment plot, with its focus on high-density annuals, can yield between 10,000 to 20,000 pounds per acre (roughly 5-10 tons). This figure is a credible baseline for home growers, though it stands in contrast to commercial farmers who can achieve potato yields over 25 tons per acre using modern agricultural methods. Horticultural yields are much higher. In greenhouses the 100 ton per acre tomato yield is nothing. Some growers achieve 160 ton or more. And that is dwarfed by intensively grown mushroom yields at around 450 ton per acre annually.

However, this number only tells part of the story. A crucial distinction must be made between the cultivated area and the total plot area. An allotment is never 100% productive. Many UK councils enforce a “75/25” rule, meaning up to 25% of a plot is permitted for non-productive uses like sheds, greenhouses, internal paths, and compost bins. Some studies suggest that, in practice, the average cultivated area is frequently much lower.
This non-productive space significantly impacts the plot’s overall efficiency. If we take a mid-range gross yield of 15,000 lbs per acre and reduce it by 25% to account for this infrastructure, the effective yield for the entire plot drops to 11,250 lbs per acre.
This revised figure reframes the comparison with a food forest. While a young food forest yields less, a mature system producing 2,000 to 8,000 pounds per acre is far more competitive than it first appears, especially as it is, by design, almost 100% productive space. The gap in long-term biomass production shrinks considerably when comparing the plots on a true like-for-like basis.
Yield Assumptions?
There are often a lot of generalisations and assumptions made when people compare yields. Mainly because yields cannot be taken in isolation. Years ago I taught farm business management and when comparing the potential profits of a field or farm we would look at the gross margin of a crop per acre. Weight of crop wasn’t important, profit and the ability to achieve other objectives was. It all had to be done with the capital, labour and machinery we had at your disposal. AND on the land being farmed. Farming high value food crops on the Fens is very different to farming sheep on Exmoor. The food crops can’t be grown on Exmoor and the sheep flocks would not be profitable on the Fen soils compared to the alternatives. You have to manage the right enterprise in the right location!
So in making comparisons we need to compare similar situations. Not compare a food forest on a steep rocky hillside to a highly fertile level allotment plot! Having said that the food forest I manage is on a reasonably fertile soil with no slope. It could be managed as an allotment if it didn’t contain mature trees. This is why we have the luxury of being able to consider a blended approach with mix of food forest and annual cropping.
A Tale of Two Diversities: Monoculture v Ecosystem
Here, the food forest has a commanding lead. An allotment typically contains perhaps 10 to 30 species of plants, mainly grown in “single-layer” annual “beds”. The focus is almost exclusively on human-edible species, offering limited ecological benefits.

A food forest, however, is a complex, multi-layered habitat designed to support a vast web of life. With 100 to 200+ species, it usually incorporates seven vertical layers, from the high tree canopy down to edible ground covers and fungi. This incredible biodiversity includes not only a wide variety of foods like apples, hazelnuts, and currants but also provides a crucial habitat for pollinators and pest predators, creating a more resilient and self-regulating system.
Counting Calories: Immediate Energy vs. Long-Term Resilience

For those growing food for sustenance, calories are a critical metric. A well managed allotment, with its focus on starchy staples, excels at producing immediate energy from its cultivated beds, potentially generating 3 to 6 million calories per acre annually from stars like potatoes. This high output, however, is dependent on the constant cycle of annual replanting and adding nutrients. And this is a well managed allotment, NOT one of the weed-ridden ones that we sometimes see!
A food forest lags in this area, producing 1 to 2.5 million calories per acre. Its most calorie-dense foods are nuts like chestnuts, which boast an impressive 2,000 kcal/kg, but these take years to yield substantial harvests. The strength of the food forest lies not in annual efficiency but in providing long-term resilience through a steady supply of perennial fats and proteins with minimal ongoing input.
Effort Over Time: The Labour Trade-Off
The two systems present a stark contrast in labour. An allotment reaches peak productivity in its first or second year but demands a consistent 200+ hours per acre annually for planting, weeding, and soil management.
A food forest, on the other hand, is a front-loaded investment. Yields are low in the first three years, but by year seven, it can reach 60-80% of its mature potential. Crucially, once established, the annual labour requirement drops dramatically to less than 50 hours per acre. The system begins to manage itself, with fallen leaves providing mulch and a balanced ecosystem keeping pests in check.
Another Variable To Consider In The Food Forest v Allotment Debate
Allotments tend to be on better soils where slopes are absent or gentle. Some of course are not, and an allotment on heavy clays is not unknown. However, food forests can be managed very well on steep slopes that can’t be cultivated. In this case we can produce a lot of calories on land that cannot beat be ploughed, rotated or even easily dug. A tree, shrubs and other crops can cope with slopes without much issue. And this means land that could never be an allotment can produce crops. The only issue is whether we can harvest them. But having seen olive farmers harvesting on steep Greek hillsides I know how ingenious humans can be!
Practical Implications for UK Gardeners: Food Forest v Allotment
So, which system is better? The answer depends entirely on your goals and land.
For immediate calories from dedicated beds, the allotment is superior. If your priority is biodiversity, ecological health, and low-maintenance food production, a food forest is the ideal choice.
When considering space efficiency, the picture is now more nuanced. While allotment beds are highly productive, the overall plot efficiency is reduced by necessary infrastructure. This makes food forests increasingly competitive on a like-for-like area basis as plot size increases. Ultimately, the most effective strategy may be a hybrid approach. By dedicating a portion of your land to allotment-style beds while integrating food forest edges for perennial nuts and fruits, you can create a system that balances immediate needs with long-term stability and ecological health.
In our food forest we will be considering our approach to food production and may well choose a blended approach as time proceeds. We already grow tomatoes, pumpkins and various gourds so annuals will not be a new departure. Blending them more purposely might be the way forward. Watch this space next spring.
