The Basic Physics Soil Drainage Is Simple Though The Process Is Complex. However Each Individual Principle Is Easy To Understand As I Explain Here

Provided we don’t expect to break basic physical laws the basic physics of soil drainage principles are simple to understand. Just don’t expect water to flow up hill .. and you’ll have few problems!
Here are the basic principles we need to understand. They aren’t too difficult.
1. Gravity:
- Water flows downhill: Gravity is the primary force driving the downhill / downward movement of water either down a slope or downwards through the soil profile. … I told you it wasn’t difficult!
- Water table depth: The depth of the water table is determined by the balance between infiltration and gravitational drainage.

2. Capillary Action:
- Water movement in small pores: Water molecules are attracted to each other and to soil particles, creating a force that can pull water upward against gravity. This isn’t water flowing uphill as the distances are minute. But I can see how some people may confuse the two!
- Influences water retention: Capillary action helps to retain water in the soil, particularly in fine-textured soils like clay. you can see capillary action in “real life”. It’s the “meniscus”, that curved bit of water where water meets container, and is obvious if we look into a glass of water.
3. Permeability:
- Soil’s ability to transmit water: Permeability is a measure of how easily water can flow through the soil. It’s influenced by factors like soil texture, structure, and compaction. Compaction is a real problem and cause lots of drainage problems. So don’t walk on wet soil or cultivate it or it will compact. Rotovating wet soil causes a “pan” where the blades smear the soil underground.
- Influences drainage rate: Highly permeable soils drain quickly, while less permeable soils drain slowly. Put simply, sand drain fast and clay drain slowly. Think of it this way, we never see puddles on a pebble beach. See about permeability below. 4. Soil Texture and Structure:
- Particle size and arrangement: The size and arrangement of soil particles influence pore size and connectivity, which in turn affect water movement. This influences soil porosity and is very important for soil drainage.
- Influences water retention and drainage: Coarse-textured soils (sandy) have larger pores and drain quickly, while fine-textured soils (clay) have smaller pores and retain water longer.
Understanding these basic physical principles is essential for effective soil management and drainage practices. By considering factors like soil texture, structure, and slope, you can optimise drainage and create a healthy soil environment for plant growth.
