Mankind Has Been Creating New Crops By Domesticating Wild Plants For Millennia. After Wheat, Maize, Rice Etc He Is Now Turning His Attention To Apios Americana, The Potato Bean.

Of course Apios is neither a potato nor a bean. But it does produce an edible tuber and is the latest in a succession of wild plants that have been domesticated. In this article I look at why we need new crops, the history of plant domestication, current research and development and focus much of this on Apios americana which I can see growing in my garden as I write this article.
The Need for New Crops: Domesticating Wild Plants
The global food system faces significant challenges, including climate change, population growth, and resource scarcity. To ensure food security, it is imperative to diversify our agricultural practices, explore new crop varieties and consider Domesticating Wild Plants.
The potato bean, a native North American legume, offers a promising solution. Its resilience to changing environmental conditions, nutritional value, and unique flavour make it a valuable addition to our agricultural toolkit both in the US and perhaps Europe. I’ve recently;y started growing it in my garden and food forest and I have already chanced on one attribute. Slugs don’t seem to like it.
Of course my discovery might be a total fluke. But I grew a plant amongst a container of climbing French Beans, the beans were ravaged by slugs but the Apios suffered no damage whatsoever. I can’t say if this is more than chance, but Will be keeping an eye on this and carrying out some trials next season.
The History Of the Domestication of Crops
Domestication is the process of selecting and breeding plants for specific traits that make them suitable for cultivation. Humans have been domesticating crops for thousands of years, shaping the plants we eat today. Consider the following …
- Early domestication: The earliest known domesticated crops were grains, such as wheat, barley, and rice. These were domesticated in the Fertile Crescent around 10,000 years ago.
- Later domestications: Other crops, such as potatoes, tomatoes, and maize/corn, were domesticated later in different regions of the world.

- Genetic modification: Modern agricultural practices can also include genetic modification via GMO, which can accelerate the process of domestication and create new crop varieties with specific traits. This is banned in Europe but common in the US.
- Plasticity: Crops that respond beneficially to human domestication are more likely to be domesticated.
- Desirable traits: preferred plants exhibit a loss of seed dormancy, increased size of harvested parts, loss of dispersal mechanisms, etc when domesticated.
Research and Development: Apios americana
Scientists and researchers are actively working to domesticate and improve the potato bean for commercial cultivation.This involves:
- Genetic analysis: Studying the genetic makeup of the potato bean to identify desirable traits.
- Breeding programs: Developing new varieties with improved yield, taste, and disease resistance.
- Cultivation techniques: Researching optimal growing conditions and management practices.
Apios: Cultivation and Care
- Sowing: Potato beans can be sown directly into the garden after the last frost, typically around May or June. They prefer well-drained soil and a sunny location.
- Spacing: Plant the tubers at a distance of 12-18 inches apart to allow for adequate growth.
- Support: While not always necessary, providing support for the vines can help prevent them from sprawling. they are not vigorous climbers .. lazy is a good word to describe their growth!
- Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods.
- Nutrition: Apply an organic fertiliser, or compost if No Dig, to the soil before planting. I’t is too early to recommend I’ve not seen adequate research to yet suggest the type of nutrients it is best to add. That is partly why I suggest No Dig, it allows the plant to find what it needs! But make a guest based on the fact a tuber is being formed rather than a fruit! Established gardeners will understand this.
Harvesting and Storage
- Harvesting: The tubers are typically ready to harvest in late summer or early autumn. Dig them up carefully to avoid damaging the tubers.
- Storage: Store harvested tubers in a cool, dry place. They can be stored for many months. Some are needed for next year’s crop!
Culinary Uses
Potato beans offer a variety of culinary possibilities. I’m told they can be:
- Boiled: Similar to potatoes, they can be boiled and mashed.
- Roasted: Roasted potato beans can be a delicious and nutritious snack.
- Steamed: Steaming brings out the natural flavour of the beans.
- Used in soups and stews: They apparently add a hearty texture and unique flavour to soups and stews.

- Sustainability: They are very low-maintenance and can contribute to sustainable agriculture practices. Other than plant and keep weed free I’ve done nothing to mine.

- Harvesting: Digging up the tubers can be time-consuming, but I’m told the rewards are worth it.
